History of desig: Arco by Flos

These days is the centenary of the birth of Achille Castiglioni, brilliant Italian architect and designer.
The two brothers, Achille and Pier Giacomo are among the leading architects and designers of the Italian post-war period, have had an intense professional activity and were among the founders of the ADI, Industrial Design Association, which over the years conferred numerous Compasso D'Oro awards on them.
One of the most famous and long-lasting projects over the years is undoubtedly the famous ARCO floor lamp

Arco

is a floor lamp with direct light, composed of 3 simple elements:
a base consisting of a parallelepiped of Carrara marble with rounded corners and a hole made at the barycenter to insert the broom handle and move the lamp smoothly despite the weight and a groove in which the stem is inserted, made of 3 profiles of stainless steel with satin finish inside which passes the electric wire and which slide one on the other allow the adjustment of the dome formed by two pieces: one fixed in the shape of a cap that has numerous holes to allow the lamp holder to cool and a aluminum ring that is movable, so you can be adapted according to the chosen location.

In reality, the purpose for which it was designed has defined its appearance:
It is not a real floor lamp, but a suspension: the need to be satisfied was to have a suspension that projected the light onto the table released from the ceiling, hence the curved sign of the stem because originally it was designed for commercial spaces rather than for domestic use

Speaking of Arco, Castiglioni said:
We thought of a lamp that projected the light on the table: there were already, but we had to turn around. Because it left space around the table the base had to be at least two meters away. Thus the idea of the bow was born: we wanted it done with pieces already on the market, and we found that the bent steel section was very good. Then there was the problem of the counterweight: it needed a heavy mass that supported everything. We thought of the cement first, but then we chose the marble because at the same weight it allowed us a smaller footprint and therefore in relation to a greater finish a lower cost.

Arco by Flos is one of the milestones of Italian design, a must for lovers of Italian style

In his book Making more with less, the Milanese architect and urban planner Stefano Boeri wrote: "Arco, which will become a great commercial success, is a synthesis of elegance, genius and simplicity, an object that does not add up, but multiplies the value initial - economic, aesthetic and symbolic - of the three objects it assembles, creating something new ".
"From the creative use of few resources - without major investments, without powerful machinery, without new materials - in 1962 not only a new lamp was born in Milan, but a new concept of light. The creative gesture of the Castiglioni brothers is the emblem of what it means to "do more with less" in the production processes "

It is interesting to know that although it has been in production since 1962, the lamp has not received any aesthetic or constructive changes: except that at the beginning a version with the black marble base and the golden dome and the modification of the electrical system were also made, to standardize the appliance to current standards and since 2012 it is also produced in the Multichip LED version as it is no longer possible to produce incandescent bulbs of 100W
It is part of the permanent collections of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and the MoMA in New York.

Achille Castiglioni said: "Delete, delete, delete and eventually find a main design component; we, while we were planning, were against the intrusiveness of the design, we were looking for the minimum length that served the function; we wanted to get to say: less than this can not be done "
Delete the superfluous until you reach the essence, which sometimes becomes an indelible mark, like Arco.
